Politicians Want a Day Off Too

Back in the late 1700s, government employees demanded that celebrations and holidays that fall on weekends be moved a day before or after the actual date so they will always have an official day-off. For example, July 4th 1779 was moved from Sunday to Monday. By 1870, it was an unpaid holiday for government employees. By 1941, it was a paid public holiday.
